The article considers the formative period of the Kazan Department of the Russian Society for Animal Welfare and the areas of its activities, the history of collaboration between the organization and the Kazan mullah, Muslim scholar Shigabutdin Marjani, and the manuscript Marjani wrote on the humane treatment of animals. In addition, the article provides biographical information about Marjani related to his childhood and domestic life.
