The article analyzes the current condition of settlements history in regional histo-riography. An attempt to combine a specific historical study of the history of villages and rural areas in the republic with source studies problems has been made. Much attention is paid to the role of initiative documentation, such as oral history materials collected during the work on the topic. The author offers an approximate list of cross-cutting themes that can be explored when studying the history of settlements in the Soviet time. The author considers the creation of a database of memoirs and interviews on the Soviet history of human settlements to be a practical application of the results of research into the history of villages and rural areas. Another practical implementation is promoting the preservation of people’s traditions of the Republic of Tatarstan in the conditions of innovations aimed at rural area development.
