Muslim Community of Post-Soviet Tatarstan: Between Ethnic-National Identity and Islam

This paper analyzes the ratio of Muslim and ethnic components in forming postSoviet Tatars’ identity as well as Tatar regional Muslim community.On the scale of identification signs for the Tatar elite and the ummah the principles of TatarismTurkism are in first place, while Islam is of secondary importance in respect to that. The political elite of Tatarstan consolidated of Islam in terms of ethnolinguistic as a part of Tatar local identity in transition. A discussion, which examines the various positions that have been developed in regard to the considered problem, is revealed in the paper.
